NEWBERRY SPRINGS – A 21-year-old Las Vegas woman was struck and killed on the 15 freeway while using a callbox in Newberry Springs on Saturday morning. A second woman sustained major injuries after the collision which followed a minor collision that led Breanna Kelly to a call box on the freeway right shoulder area.
The collision occurred on the 15 freeway when Kelly was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt and hit a second vehicle from behind at around 5:40 a.m. Following the minor collision, the Chevrolet was left in the #1 lane of traffic as Kelly and two other occupants walked to the call box on the right shoulder of the freeway.
Shortly after, a Toyota Sienna collided into the stopped Chevrolet causing the Toyota to overturn. A Ford F-150 approached the active collision and in an attempt to avoid a collision with the Sienna, swerved to the right shoulder and into the call box that was being used by Kelly.
Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was a passenger of the Toyota Sienna was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to Antelope Valley Hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision. Anyone with information should contact the Barstow California Highway Patrol at (760)255-5900.
