PHOENIX, AZ. – Ten-year-old Summerbell Brown was sleeping when the vehicle her family was in was sprayed with bullets killing her.
On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, just before 5:45 p.m., the Brown’s vehicle, occupied by the father driver, mother front-seat passenger, and two daughters in the backseat were driving when they cut off a pickup truck while driving on their way home. They continued driving toward their home and the white Ford F150 continued following their vehicle very closely. The continued to their home and the truck continued to follow as they drove into their driveway in the 3800 block of West Moreland.
The father got out of the truck and asked the male driver in the truck why he was following them. The driver allegedly said nothing and shot multiple times toward the family’s car. The father was struck and Summerbell who was sleeping in the backseat was also struck. The mother and the other daughter were not injured.
The suspect fled in his vehicle. The father and Summerbell were transported to the hospital. Summerbell died as a result of her injuries and her father was treated and released. Authorities reached out to the public and through their tireless efforts, they identified the suspect as 20-year-old Joshua Gonzalez.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis described Gonzalez as having an extensive criminal history with instances of violence. Tips from the community including investigative leads led authorities to Gonzalez’ home in the 6200 block of west Fairmount Avenue, around 5 miles from the crime scene. When they arrived they located the truck and despite modifications done to alter the truck’s appearance, positively identified it as the suspect vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and a handgun was located inside the garage of the home. Forensic evidence led to determination that the handgun located was the same handgun used in the shooting.
Gonzalez was booked into jail for one count of 1st Degree Murder, and three counts of Aggravated Assault.
