KISSIMMEE, Fl. – An unlicensed driver hit and killed a 13-year-old girl who was riding her bike while driving authorities said.
On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at around 2019, Micaela Coronel, 25, an Argentinian native who was staying in Kissimmee, Florida, struck the girl who was riding her bike to Lake Marion Middle School. The 8th grade student was in the area of Homosassa Road, when she was struck by the Chrysler Town and Country van.
The victim, Mariana Perez Borroto was critically injured and was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Mariana died as a result of her injuries.
“Our hearts are broken today, said Johna Jozwiak, principal at Lake Marion Creek Middle School. “We are devastated by the loss of a very special member of our Lake Marion Creek Middle family. Mariana was a bright and sweet-natured girl who possessed a very polite and calm manner. She enjoyed studying history and loved spending her free time sketching in notebooks. We are devastated by this tragic news. Counselors are available at school for students and staff members. We have also rescheduled the rest of this week’s Florida Standards Assessments testing to next week.”
Coronel told deputies she’s been in the country on a “visitor pass” from Argentina since October 2018, and presented them with an Argentinian identification card,” Polk County Sheriff officials said. “She does not have a Florida driver’s license, and deputies determined through their investigation that she does not have a valid driver’s license at all.” Coronel blamed condensation, which she said covered around 80% of her windshield obstructing her view. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
Coronel was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license causing death, a third-degree felony. Being that she was charged with a felony, PCSO will be checking her status with ICE. “This suspect should not have even been behind the wheel of a vehicle, said Sheriff Grady Judd. “This is an awful, senseless tragedy that should never have occurred. This beautiful child should be turning 14 years old in just two weeks, but for this suspect’s illegal actions. Mariana’s family and friends are in our prayers.”
