19-Year-Old Whittier Man Convicted of Fatal Crash Near La Serna High School

WHITTIER – A 19-year-old man was convicted of driving under the influence, and overturning his vehicle killing a 14-year-old girl and critically injuring another.

On April 26, 2016, Daniel Vasquez consumed one or more alcoholic beverages prior to getting into a vehicle and driving five others teens to La Serna High School in Whittier. Prosecutors said that Vasquez drove excessive speeds, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which ultimately overturned.

A passenger, Ivette Macias was pronounced dead at the scene, a 15-year-old girl sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital. On July 20, 2016, Vasquez was charged in connection with the crash.

Vasquez pleaded no contest on Tuesday, to two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury. Also, as part of his plea, he admitted to the special allegations that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on one victim and caused a second victim to become comatose due to brain injury and to suffer paralysis.
