YERMO – A 30-year-old Yermo woman and 47-year-old Yermo man were arrested for child endangerment after deputies located an unsealed container of mercury in a home occupied by children.

On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at around 9:19 a.m., deputies responded to a home in the 36700 block of Frampton Road with a search warrant. The search warrant was obtained after two vehicle burglaries that occurred in the parking lot of Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner, located at 35654 Yermo Road. Several of the stolen items were located in the home and a vehicle on Cassandra Saling’s property. In addition to the property being located, the video surveillance captured of the thefts showed a woman with a description matching Saling. Deputies made contact with Saling, who was at work and arrested her for the possession of stolen property.

Also found during the search was ammunition learned to belong to a Jeffrey Dewerff, a convicted felon. He was arrested for being a felon in possession of ammunition and both Saling and Dewerff were transported to the Barstow Jail. An unsealed container of mercury was located in the home, where Saling’s children were also living.  Direct and indirect exposure to mercury can lead to severe health problems or death. The children were removed from the home by the San Bernardino County Children and Family Services. Both suspects were also charged with child endangerment as a result of mercury.

Saling and Dewerff were both released on bail on the evening of Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Barstow Sheriff’s Station at 760/256-4838.
