The 45-year-old Claremont man who inappropriately touched a 9-year-old boy while in a restroom at the Puente Hills Mall in the City of Industry was convicted today. During a hearing a hearing Richard Matthew Camarena pleaded no contest to the single felony count of a lewd act upon a child.
On July 8, 2016, the boy went to the movies with his family in the City of Industry. When the movie was over the child went to use a mall restroom, officials said. The boy locked the stall but Camarena wiggled the door open, entered the stall and inappropriately touched the boy.
Camarena fled after the boy struggled with him, but not before being caught on surveillance footage. The boy exited the restroom and told his family about what happened. The family called the police, who took a report and searched for Camarena circulating surveillance captured photos.
Camarena was identified, located and arrested on July 23, 2016, the prosecutor said in a news release. He will be sentenced on August 31st and is expected to be sentenced to three years in prison. Camarena will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
