DeLand, Fl. – A man and woman were charged with felony child abuse after police found drugs in a roach-infested vehicle with a toddler
inside.
DeLand Police said that at around 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, they noticed a vehicle with two adults and a small child inside. The vehicle was parked in a small park near South Stone Street and West Highland Avenue. The officer said that the temperature was 104 degrees and the vehicle was off.
Due to the extreme temperatures, the officer made contact with the adult occupants in the vehicle to see if they needed any help. The two inside were identified as David Dexter, 30, and Christan Wilson, 28. Dexter made movements where it appeared he was trying to conceal something. Drug paraphernalia was seen during the contact with Dexter and Wilson.
The officer began investigating further into the narcotics leading to the finding of needles used for narcotics. One of the needles had a liquid substance inside. A bottle cap which contained a substance being prepared for injection was also located, police said. The substances were later identified as opioids.
Both Dexter and Wilson were removed from the vehicle. Drug paraphernalia was located in Wilson’s purse. The child was walking around in the vehicle without shoes, and was wearing a shirt and soiled diaper. Numerous scabs were on the child’s leg and another on her neck, which attracted insects.
“Inside the vehicle the officers observed several species of insects including roaches that were climbing across the seat near the child,”DeLand Police officials said. “There were also opened and spoiled food containers, dirty diapers and soiled clothing.” The toddler was medically cleared and was taken into the custody of a family member.
Police said that Dexter told them that him and Wilson had purchased the substance in the needle and bottlecap and identified it as Dilaudid. He said that the child was in the vehicle when it was purchased and used. When detectives asked about the wound on the toddler’s neck, he said that she bumped into someone’s lit cigarette.
. Dexter and Wilson were both charged with one count each of felony child abuse, possession of a schedule II substance and one misdemeanor charge each of possession of drug paraphernalia. Both remain in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $5,500 bond.
