GAS CITY, IN. – An entire city is in mourning over the death of 10-year-old Skylea Carmack who was reported missing on Saturday, August 31, 2019.
Gas City Police in Indiana were told that Skylea went missing at 4:00 p.m. on the 200 block of East South D Street in Gas City. Before she was found deceased, a large number of police officers and volunteers went door to door passing out flyers hoping to find Skylea safe. Search parties were set up, which included law enforcement and volunteers.
When her body was found in the shed behind her home, they determined that although her legal time of death is listed as when she was found, she was likely deceased since the day she was reported missing. Her body was removed from the shed and taken to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center, in Fort Wayne for an autopsy.
The autopsy determined that Skylea was strangled to death and that her manner of death is homicide. Following the discovery, Skylea’s stepmother, Amanda Carmack, 34, was arrested and booked for murder, neglect, strangulation and child abuse. Authorities said that they believe that Skylea had already been murdered when she was reported missing.
