MILWAUKEE, WI. – A 29-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with beating his son, leading to his death after the child ate his Father’s Day cake.
Authorities said that Travis Stackhouse lived with his girlfriend and their five children in the area of 26th and Ruby in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Stackhouse cared for the five children when their mother was at work. The criminal complaint states that 911 was called reporting that medical aid was needed for a 5 year-old child. When they arrived, the child was found lifeless and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Stackhouse told police that he was watching the children on Friday, June 21, 2019. He said that while playing, the 5-year-old boy fell down the stairs, but did not appear to be injured. He said that the child began vomiting at some point, but the day went on as normal. His girlfriend came home and they went outside, when he went back in, three of the children were eating his Father’s Day cake. He said that he was angry, but did not hit any of the children.
The injuries were not consistent with the story, authorities said. The child had bruising to both eyes, a cut on his lip, and a laceration to his sternum. His autopsy ruled his death as homicide. When the children were interviewed, one of the children told authorities that Stackhouse hit the boy in the stomach and back. He said that the boy has never fell down the stairs.
A second interview was done with Stackhouse who told the same story as the first time. After further questioning, Stackhouse told authorities that he was very upset that others were eating his Father’s Day cake when he only had one piece. He said that he punched the 5-year-old boy in his stomach and face.
Stackhouse now faces first-degree reckless homicide.
