NEWARK, N.J. – The Indian national who admitted to the sexual assault of a sleeping girl who was seated next to him on an airplane in July was sentenced to 90 days in prison on Friday.
The two were on a United Airlines flight from Seattle, Washington, to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Vijaykumar Krishnappa, 29, according to statements made in court, intentionally touched the sleeping girl near her groin over her leggings without her consent on the July 23, 2017, flight. On November 8, 2017, Krishnappa admitted to purposely doing this as the girl was seated next to him on the flight.
Krishnappa was sentenced to 90 days in prison for assault in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. U.S. Attorney Carpenito credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher in Newark, and the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey, with the investigation leading to the conviction and sentence.
