CORONA – A Corona package thief was identified and arrested on Tuesday authorities said.
On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, the suspect, later identified as Jimmy Nguyen, 23, of Riverside, was captured on home surveillance stealing packages left on doorsteps in 100 block of Engleman Drive in the City of Corona. His vehicle, a 2013-2015, Subaru WRX was also captured on surveillance and shared on social media last week.
The reporting party called the Corona Police on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 11:40 a.m. after noticing the suspicious car in the area of Mountain Gate Park. “The citizen spoke with the dispatch center while watching the vehicle, reporting that the driver of the car appeared to be following a delivery vehicle through a neighborhood,” Corona Police officials said in a written statement. As the suspect vehicle apparently was following a delivery vehicle through the neighborhood, the reporting party spoke with the dispatchers. “Thanks to the continuing observations of the witness, officers located and stopped the suspect in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Foothill Parkway,” Corona Police officials added.
Police made contact with and detained Nguyen. A search of the suspect vehicle led to police locating empty packaging that did not belong to Nguyen leading to his mail-theft arrest. Nguyen was released with a notice to appear in court, while additional mail theft charges are pending.
Authorities said that they have been able to recover some of the stolen property and are working on returning the items to their owners. Police attribute the quick arrest being due to the victim’s posting on social media and the alert reporting party seeing the suspect vehicle and reporting it, only one week after the theft.
