Sold at Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and other home appliance stores between March 2011 and November 2016, 2.8 million Samsung top-loading washing machines have been recalled. This recall came following 733 reports of excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis. Nine people reported injuries relating to this recall including a broken jaw, an injured shoulder, and other impact or fall related injuries.
Samsung, who was also the subject of the Note 7 recall, is now going to have to foot the bill for this new manufacture defect. Consumers can choose a free in home repair, which will include reinforcement of the washer’s top and a free one-year-extension of the manufacture warranty.
The consumer can also receive a rebate, which can be applied toward purchasing a new Samsung or other brand washing machine. This will come with the free installation of the new unit as well as removal of the old unit. The rebate amount will be based on the manufacture date and model of the recalled washer. Those who choose a Samsung washer will receive an additional loyalty incentive of up to $150 toward their new purchase.
Consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the November 4, 2016, recall may also opt for a full refund.
Samsung officials said that all known customers will receive a Home Label Kit, which includes a control panel guide and safety instructions by mail. “When applied as instructed, the new control panel guide included in the kit will ensure that users select a reduced-speed spin cycle for washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items,” Samsung officials said. “The Home Label Kit also includes two warning labels to apply to the washer as a reminder, as well as a user manual supplement with additional safety instructions.”
Until the Home Label Kit arrives and is installed consumers can still wash using the delicate or waterproof cycle when washing bedding, water resistant, and bulky items. The lower speed reduced the risk of the top detaching from the machine chassis.
