CHICAGO, IL. – A woman and her elderly father (or grandfather) are in critical condition, while her two children are dead as a result of a botched murder-suicide authorities said.
At around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2020, police received a call regarding a person down near a building in the 7200 block of S. South Shore Drive in Chicago, Illinois. When they arrived they found a woman in her early-to-mid 30’s lying on the ground with her toddler son nearby. The child was described to be around 1-year-old and was in serious condition when he was rushed to the hospital. The baby boy died as a result of the incident while police and emergency medical personnel rushed up to an apartment home on the 11th floor where they found a man in his 70’s with multiple stab wounds and lacerations and located a second toddler, around 2-years of age inside a bathtub. The child was not responsive and was also, along with the elderly man, and the woman later identified as the daughter (or possibly the granddaughter) of the elderly man and mother of the two children, to the hospital.
The second child died at the hospital, while the man and woman remain in critical condition. It was learned that the woman stabbed the man. Police said that the child in the tub had head injuries, which appeared to be puncture-type wounds and he also had burns from the water. The investigation also revealed that the woman threw the other child from the window and jumped out the 11th-floor window behind him. Police said that is is unclear how she survived the 11-floor fall. The man was responsive when transported and was able to tell authorities that he was stabbed before she jumped from the window with her son.
Authorities have been unable to obtain any video of the outside portion of the incident at this time. There is no known motive at this time but authorities are still investigating, including a multitude of interviews with neighbors and family members. Although, the elderly man who resided at the apartment home referred to the woman as his daughter, police think he may, in fact; be her grandfather. They also are not sure if the woman and/or her children lived in the home with him at the time of the incident.
