Are you uninsured or underinsured? Walmart is offering a free health screening, health education, service and products at Walmart stores on October 15th for “Walmart Wellness Day”. Due to the overwhelming response last year, Walmart is bringing back what very well may be the largest health event in the nation. These screenings are expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of people who take the step toward health awareness and possibly better health.

These events, as previously stated, will be nationwide, at over 4600 Walmart stores and will be held from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm local time on Saturday, October 15, 2016. All attendees are qualified to receive free blood glucose, blood pressure and at some locations; vision screenings. Product samples and information on your health insurance options will also be available. Immunizations will be available during these events.

“The cost of healthcare in America has risen to more than $3 trillion, but the health of our customers is something we can’t put a price on,” said George Riedl, senior vice president and president, Health and Wellness, Walmart U.S.

In the single-day event, in 2015 Walmart screened over 280,000 people, gave immunizations to nearly 52,000 people and gave out over 2 million free samples of healthier food options. Nearly 3000 of those who were screen were advised to visit their doctor based off of their blood glucose screening results. Over 7,000 had higher than normal blood pressure readings and were also advised to seek medical follow-up. These screenings may very well have saved lives including a patient screened last year in Everett, Penn. The Walmart pharmacy manager said that the female patient’s readings were so alarmingly high that she was taken directly to the emergency room to be treated for a hypertensive emergency.

Walmart officials said that during Walmart Wellness Day, companies such as GoJo, Pfizer, US Nutrition, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Clorox, Kleenex, Dannon, Kellogg’s, Mars, Vega will be in-store providing customers with free product samples. Additionally, Trividia, Bausch & Lomb, Becton Dickinson, Bayer, 3M, Reckitt-Benckiser, Zeiss, Traditional Medicinals, Iovate, Equal, True Science, Boomchickapop, Prestige, Enjoy Life Foods, Voortman Cookies, Amneal will serve as sponsors of the event. “Our commitment to this doesn’t end in our Health and Wellness area,” added Riedl. “We have many of the products customers need to start or continue their journey to a healthy lifestyle such as fresh produce, apparel, exercise equipment and wearable technology.”

In addition to the one-day event, Walmart is working with DirectHealth.com to assist customers in finding health care options which are feasible for them. They will also help with enrollment to these plans if needed. “As more than 90 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store, we’re committed and uniquely positioned to providing accessible and affordable healthcare that helps busy families live better. Walmart Wellness Day is at the center of that commitment. These screenings provide customers with a basic yet vital understanding of their general health conditions and ways to improve it,” said Riedl.
