COVINA – A 44-year-old Los Angeles woman was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of her mother in 2015.
Los Angeles County District Attorney’s officials said that Athina Sumi Rivera was staying in her mother’s room for the night at Atria Covina, a senior living facility located in the 800 block of West San Bernardino Road in the City of Covina on September 7, 2015. Rivera woke up and began stabbing her mother officials said.
An emergency call was made from the room and facility staff responded to find 61-year-old Margaret Yamaguchi bleeding profusely. Emergency medical responded to the scene where Yamaguchi was determined to be dead at the scene. Rivera was arrested in connection with the stabbing.
Rivera pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and also admitted to the special allegation of using a knife during the commission of the crime.
