RANCHO CUCAMONGA – A father and son were both arrested during the investigation into a reported armed robbery at Victoria Gardens last week.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, at around 8:07 p.m. deputies were dispatched to 12500 block of North Mainstreet regarding a fight at the AMC Theatre. “Several juveniles left the theatre and ran toward the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center courtyard,” said Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff’s Station officials. “Deputy Erwin located a 15-year-old male victim who had his $600 backpack stolen.” Through further investigation, deputies learned that Sherman Steverson, 18, of Montclair, and three other black males confronted him. Sherman pointed a gun at the victim and demanded a $600 backpack that the victim had just received for his birthday in March. The young victim hesitated to give Sherman his backpack but eventually complied with his demand.

An arrest warrant was authored for Sherman who was positively identified as one of the suspects. Four days later, on April 17, 2018, the arrest warrant was served at Sherman’s home in the 4500 block of Hawthorne Street in Montclair. Raymond Steverson, 56, of Montclair,  Sherman’s father opened the door but was uncooperative and did not allow deputies into his home. A search warrant was written and served. Sherman was located inside of the home and was taken into custody.

The backpack was located inside the home, also found was a replica handgun and ammunition in Sherman’s room. Raymond’s bedroom was also part of the search and in his room, deputies located cocaine, a scale, ammunition and a significant amount of cash

Sherman and Raymond were booked into the West Valley Detention Center. Sherman was booked for the robbery, with a $250,000 bail. Raymond was booked for possession of cocaine for sales and being a felon in possession of ammunition, with a $50,000 bail. Raymond’s most recent offense in San Bernardino County per court records was August 2012, for possession of a controlled substance.

Authorities are holding the backpack temporarily as evidence but will be returned to the victim.  Anyone with information regarding this investigation is urged to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department.
