NORWALK, Calif. – Four children are in protective custody with the Department of Children and Family Services after a four-year-old child gained access to an unsecured gun and shot his mother through driver’s seat.
On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at around 3:30 p.m. deputies from the Norwalk Station responded to the 14600 block of Dinard Street regarding an gunshot victim. When deputies arrived the found the Norwalk woman suffering from the gunshot wound to her mid torso. The woman was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Through investigation, it was determined the woman was in the parking lot with her three children when one of the children shot through the backseat injuring the mother. Authorities said that no other occupants in the vehicle were injured. The weapon was recovered and learned to belong to an adult male identified as Brandon Gilbert Ambriz, 24, Norwalk, who is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm. Ambriz left the shotgun inside a vehicle that the children were regularly driven in. He was arrested for Possession of a Firearm, and Child Endangerment.
On Friday, January 25, 2019, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office filed charges including four counts of child abuse and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. The case includes the allegations that Ambriz was convicted of burglaries, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and accessory after the fact between 2013 and 2017. Ambriz can be sentenced to over 25 years in prison if he is convicted as charged. He is being held in lieu of $575,000 bail.
