ARLINGTON, Tenn. – National Tequila Day is a little known holiday celebrated by many Americans by enjoying a tequila, usually discounted for the day. A 26-year-old Tennessee mother was one of those Americans but her celebration landed her in jail authorities said.
On the evening of July 24, 2018, just a little before 7:00 p.m., a couple was leaving the Cazadores Mexican Grill and heard a cry coming from a nearby vehicle. When they looked inside, they noticed an infant girl in the backseat of the not running vehicle. The windows were partially down and although the baby was clearly sweating during the 95 degree evening, she appeared to be otherwise alert and healthy. The couple called 911 to report their finding.
Shelby County deputies arrived only moments following the call and found the baby girl, who they immediately removed from the vehicle. Paramedics arrived and began looking over the small baby girl. As they assessed her condition, Rachel Vanwagner exited the restaurant barefoot. As she ran hysterically towards the child, who was still in the care of the paramedics, she explained that she was only gone for around a half hour having “one drink”.
Vanwagner was arrested and booked into jail for child abuse. Child Services responded to the scene and placed the child with the family of the child.
