NEWBERRY SPRINGS – A 60-year-old Newberry Springs man, who was riding his motorized bicycle died after being struck by a vehicle as he was riding on Valley Center Road, east of Minneola Thursday night.
At around 8:12 p.m. the man on the motorized bike was traveling eastbound on Valley Center Road when he was struck from behind by a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer. The 24-year-old male driver immediately pulled over to the right side of the road and called 911.
Barstow station deputies and Cal Fire responded to the scene to find the man in the roadway with a major head injury but “slightly verbal”, according to the CHP incident logs. An airship was requested with the landing zone being Barstow Community Hospital. The man was transported by ground to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m.
The driver of the Lancer was uninjured. Drugs and alcohol are not a suspected factor in the collision. The name of the deceased man will be released when the family is notified. The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
