LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – A motorcycle officer was struck by a vehicle and killed today on the I-15 south, near Nichols Road.
On Saturday, April 6, 2019, at around 4:30 p.m. Sergeant Steve Licon, from the Riverside area California Highway Patrol (CHP) lost his life after being struck while on the shoulder of the freeway. Sgt. Licon was airlifted to Inland Valley Regional Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries. “Our hearts are heavy after the immeasurable loss of a friend, father, husband, and hero,” CHP officials said.
Three people, unknown ages were transported to Inland Valley Regional. Their identities and condition are unknown at this time. It is believed based on witness statements that Sgt. Licon was pulled to the shoulder with another vehicle when a driver drove into the shoulder attempting to pass slower vehicles at around 40 mph.
The freeway was closed for the investigation on the Southbound 15 from Indian Truck Trail to Nichols Road. The cause of the collision is unclear at this time and the investigation is ongoing. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Riverside County District Attorney’s office for review.
