NEWBERRY SPRINGS – Two Newberry Springs men were arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, stolen license plates, and possession of a firearm.

On Thursday, August 16, 2018, at around 9:42 p.m. Barstow station deputies made contact with the occupants of a suspicious vehicle parked near Fort Cady Road and Auklet Road in Newberry Springs. The two occupants in the vehicle were identified as Stephen Gumpert, 45, and Shawn Burge, 42. A records check of the vehicle’s license plate identified it as a plate that had been reported stolen in May of 2018 in Fontana, California.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies located a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and shotgun rounds. Burge was arrested for being a felon in possession Burge was arrested for being a felon in possession of a weapon and ammunition. Gumpert was arrested for possession of stolen property and an unrelated outstanding warrant. Authorities said that the vehicle the suspects were driving was determined to be an unreported stolen vehicle after the owner was contacted.
