VICTORVILLE– A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal traffic collision that took place on Friday, December 16, 2016. At around 10:20 p.m. deputies from the Victorville Station and emergency medical personnel responded to a traffic collision on Palmdale and Emerald Roads in the City of Victorville. When they arrived they located two vehicles; a black Toyota Echo and a black 2006 Toyota Highlander with major damage.
A 36-year-old Victorville resident was driving the Echo east on Palmdale Road in the #1 (fast) lane of traffic and slowed to make a left turn onto northbound Emerald Road. The Highlander driven by 34-year-old Adelanto resident, Florencio Arellanes Bernal failed to slow or stop and slammed into the back of the Echo causing his vehicle to flip several times before coming to a rest on its roof in the eastbound lanes of Palmdale Road.
The driver of the Echo was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment, the passenger in the Echo; a 47-year-old Victorville resident was pronounced dead at the scene. The identification of the deceased person will be released once family is notified. Bernal was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested for Gross Vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Driving Under the Influence Causing Great Bodily Injury or Death, Driving Under the Influence Causing Great Bodily Injury or Death with BAC .08% or over and Driving Under the Influence of Combination of Drugs and Alcohol Causing Great Bodily Injury or Death.
Palmdale Road was closed to traffic in both directions in the area of the collision until approximately 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning for the investigation. This is an ongoing investigation by the Victorville Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). Anyone with information about the collision is requested to contact Deputy C.
