ADELANTO – Spring is in full swing, birds chirping, seeds being planted, and we can’t forget something just as American than apple pie, baseball! Everyone is flooding to out-of-area stadiums to cheer on their favorite major league teams, some even traveling outside of the state to see opening games played by the favorite team. How about if you can enjoy the same great fun close to home? You can! The High Desert Yardbirds are preparing for their 2018 debut, coming Sunday, May 27, at 7:00 p.m.
For the 27th consecutive year, the City of Adelanto will be the host to professional baseball, not in the spring, but just in time for summer. The Yardbirds will play a spring training game (for the Pecos League, although MLB spring training season has ended) May 19 in Adelanto and will again open the season at California City for two games. “We’re excited that the Pecos League Champions will be returning to the High Desert for fans to experience professional baseball close to home,” said Aaron Korn, Adelanto Stadium Manager.
In anticipation of summer baseball, the city has made improvements to the baseball field. The Yardbirds and Pecos League is excited to be back in Adelanto for the second year,” said Andrew Dunn, the Pecos League commissioner. Along with the lure of good ole’ family baseball fun, special promotions are planned including:
Taco Tuesdays,
Wienie Wednesdays, and
Family Feast Fridays
“We think we’ll have another exciting, competitive season as we did last year,” said Korn. A total of 35 home games are planned, with the season finale being Thursday, July 26th. With no final roster, tryouts are coming just before the season opener on May 19 at Griffith Park in Los Angeles at 9:00 a.m. Local talent including both players and coaches are expected to be included on the roster. Tickets go on sale on Monday, April 2nd. Baseball lovers will have the choice of season tickets for the low price of $225 per seat or $8 per seat, with the special 4th of July game being $10 per seat.
Staffing for the home games has almost been filled with the Pecos League conducting the hiring. Residents can follow Adelanto Stadium and Event Center on Facebook to learn about special promotions during baseball season, and to see other events coming to the stadium. And they can find a calendar of events at adelantostadium.com.
