VICTORVILLE – An Apple Valley man was convicted of multiple charges, all related to a 2015 domestic violence incident against his estranged wife and now faces over 30 years in prison.
On Thursday, December 1, 2016, 44-year-old Rene Vasquez was convicted of one count each of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, stalking in violation of a restraining order, and two counts each of; vandalism over $400, and dissuading a witness from prosecuting a crime. In addition to the charges, Vasquez admitted to a prior strike and five prison priors, District Attorney’s officials said.
The victim, a Victorville woman, got a restraining order against Vasquez after threats made to her. “After it was served, the defendant saw the victim driving her vehicle in Victorville and began chasing her,” said Deputy District Attorney David Foy. “The victim fled and the defendant rammed her car with his vehicle, causing $4,000 in damage.” On the same day, prior to ramming the victim’s vehicle, Vasquez bashed the garage door of her Victorville home causing $650 in damage. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon but was bailed out.
“Over the next two and a half months, the defendant continued to send the victim unwanted texts, emails and make phone calls to her, threatening things like ‘you will be regret this’ and reminding her over and over again that they will be married ‘until death do us part,’” said Foy. Vasquez also pressured the victim to recant her statement to authorities. “Unfortunately for the defendant, the victim recorded his call, and it was played to the jury,” said Foy.
Vasquez is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on February 3, 2017, for sentencing.
