RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – An Apple Valley woman who was arrested on February 27, 2019, for abusing an elderly man died in her jail cell only one week later.
Perla Alvarado, 50, of Apple Valley, was arrested after police responded to a welfare check request at a home in the 23100 block of Minnetonka Road. Through investigation, deputies determined that she had made threats to her elderly male family member. The victim sought assistance by fleeing to a neighbor’s home, asking them to call 911. Soon after fleeing, Alvarado showed up at the home and punched the victim several times in the head, arm, and trunk. The elderly man fell to the ground as she continued to assault him. The elderly man sustained multiple injuries as a result of the beating.
On March 6, 2019, the staff at the West Valley Detention Center went to Alvarado’s single-person cell at around 1 a.m. and discovered her unresponsive and cold to the touch officials said. Her death is being investigated. An autopsy will be performed to determine her cause of death.
