VICTORVILLE – Two were arrested and one remains at large following a shoplifting and high-speed chase authorities said.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 26, 2018, deputies from the Victorville station responded to a business in the 14300 block of Bear Valley Road for the report of shoplifting. The reporting party was able to provide information indicating that a male and female suspect, later identified as Gilbert Canales, 42, of Riverside and Crystal Hughes, 40, of San Bernardino, fled in a blue Honda Civic being driven by a male suspect, later identified as Christopher Turner, 31, of San Jacinto.
The deputies located the Honda and attempted to stop the vehicle. With the lights and sirens activated, Turner continued driving leaving the parking lot and driving south on Amargosa Road. The suspect continued to Main Street in the City of Hesperia, as the marked patrol units followed. He entered the 15 freeway heading southbound and continued driving through the Cajon Pass. “After reaching the bottom of the Cajon Pass, Turner turned around on the dirt shoulder and began driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway,” said Victorville Sheriff’s Station Spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez in the news release. The Sheriff’s helicopter took over the pursuit until Turner drove through a security fence in a gated Hesperia community. All three suspects fled on foot. Canales and Turner were located in the backyard of a home in the 7000 block of Oak Cove Court.
Canales was booked into the High Desert Detention Center for obstructing a public officer and shoplifting. He was cited and released on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at around 4:27 a.m. As a result of Turner driving at high speeds, ignoring stop signs and traffic signals and driving into oncoming traffic, he was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for felony vandalism and evading a peace officer with disregard for safety. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Thursday, June 28, 2018. Deputies were not able to locate Crystal Hughes.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hughes is asked to contact Deputy S. Taylor at the Victorville Police Department, (760) 241-2911 or Sheriff’s Dispatch, (760) 956-5001.
