BARSTOW – A 22-year-old Barstow man was arrested for the brutal beating and rape of his 3-month-old son’s mother. On November 11, 2016, Deondre Lamar Smiler met with his ex-girlfriend, who he dated for three years and their 3-month-old son for a custody visit at an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Yucca Avenue.
During the visit a verbal altercation ensued which led to an assault of the victim. During the assault, Smiler allegedly hit the victim in the face and abdomen, and bit the victim, causing injuries to her mouth and back. Smiler then held the victim to the ground and forcibly raped her. Before leaving, Smiler then grabbed money that was in the victim’s possession and left the location.
The victim reported the incident shortly before 9:50 p.m., when Barstow police arrived they processed the scene and conducted an area check. During the area check police were unable to locate Smiler, but on November 12, 2016, at around 1:15 a.m. he was located by a detective in the 1300 block of East Main Street. Smiler was positively identified as the suspect and was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for rape, infliction of injury on former dating partner, and robbery. Smiler is also being held for prior unrelated charges including; drug possession, criminal trespassing, statutory rape, and domestic battery.
