RANCHO MIRAGE – A Riverside Community Service Officer (CSO) driving a marked patrol car was involved in a traffic collision with a bicycle early Wednesday morning. At around 7:50 a.m. the black and white 2011 Ford Crown was driving eastbound on Frank Sinatra Drive near Thompson Road/Morningside Drive.
A 79-year-old bicyclist, identified as Forrest Albright, from Palm Desert, was riding a Trek bicycle westbound on Frank Sinatra Drive coming to the same intersection in the bike lane. The CSO began to make a left turn on Thompson Road and the front of the Trek struck the front right of the Ford causing Albright to fall to the ground.
Albright was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for the treatment of moderate injuries. Mr. Albright was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. No other injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. CHP officials said the intersection is not controlled by a green arrow, only a circular green light. Motorists making the left turn are required to yield to oncoming traffic.
