BANNING, Calif. – Two suffered moderate injuries when a refrigerated big rig overturned on the 10 freeway in Banning dropping 40,000 pounds of margarine in tubs onto the freeway.

The traffic collision took place on Friday, June 21, 2019, at around 6:55 a.m. The 23-year-old driver, a Lathrop, California man was driving the 2019 Volvo truck tractor, pulling a 2019 Utility trailer westbound on the 10 freeway. A 20-year-old woman also from Lathrop was in the sleeper compartment of the truck.

The driver was traveling in the #4 lane at around 60 mph, CHP officials said. For reasons which remain under investigation, he allowed his vehicle to drive off the north road edge after the 8th Street bridge. The big rig went onto the north shoulder, as the driver attempted to steer back into lanes, he went down the north embankment, across the 8th street onramp to westbound I-10 and collided with a block wall, north of the freeway. The impact caused the trailer to open, spilling the 40,000 pounds of Earth Balance butter spread onto the 8th Street onramp.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. No other injuries were reported as a result of the collision and no other vehicles were involved. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
