ADELANTO – The seat made vacant by Councilmember Jermaine Wright following his November 6, 2017, arrest for bribery and plot to burn down his business “Fat Boyz Grill” in order to collect insurance money is set to be filled.
According to City of Adelanto officials, Mayor Pro Tem Wright has not attended a City Council meeting for over 60 consecutive days, with his last being on October 25, 2017. Due to his extended absence, Wright is considered having abandoned his seat on the council. Rather than conducting a special election for his seat, which would have cost the city approximately $70,000, the City Council voted to accept resident applicants, conduct interviews, and appoint a resident to fill his term set to expire November 2020. Interested residents ages 18 or over can submit a resume for the vacant position by 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
“We are following the steps in the city’s Charter which says we must act within 30 days from the day that the seat on the Council was vacated,” said Mayor Rich Kerr. The city council will interview potential candidates to choose the appointee. “We’ll conduct interviews in open session on January 23 and make a final selection at that time,” said Kerr.
In addition to the announcement of the open position, the City of Adelanto officials also announced the Councilmember John “Bug” Woodard was chosen by the Council as Mayor Pro Tem. Mayor Kerr nominated Woodard, and the council unanimously approved. For more information about the application process to fill Wright’s vacant seat, contact Cindy Herrera at (760)246-2300 extension 11122.
