LOS ANGELES – A Commerce swimming coach was charged on Wednesday with the sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl. Steven Matthew Garcia, 27, was charged with sexually assaulting the young child at the Commerce aquatic Center between October 2016, and January 2017.
Garcia is charged with six counts of lewd acts upon a child and was arraigned on Wednesday pleading not guilty. The victim alleges that Garcia fondled her in an employee lounge at the aquatic center on several occasions. In order to keep the assaults a secret, Garcia allegedly threatened the girl while ordering her to not tell anyone.
Garcia was arrested on Friday, January 13, 2017, and was booked into the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He is being held in lieu of $750,000 bail. If convicted as charged, Garcia will face up to 14 years in prison Los Angeles County District Attorney officials said.
