POMONA – A Pomona man was convicted and sentenced for the murder of a 33-year-old youth pastor on Tuesday. Arvin Benson, 29, pleaded no contest to three felony counts including one count of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of attempted murder for a 2013 walk-up shooting. Immediately following the plea, Benson was sentenced to 34 years and four months in state prison.
Los Angeles County District attorney officials said that on November 11, 2013, the victim, Daniel Diaz was sitting in a vehicle with two others while at a Pomona stop sign. While they were stopped, Benson reportedly walked up to their vehicles and shot at the vehicle several times striking Diaz. Diaz was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Through investigation, Pomona police officers identified the suspect as Arvin Benson. Benson was arrested the following month and was charged on September 8, 2015, in connection with the killing.
