MENIFEE, Calif. – A 25-year-old Corona man was struck by a vehicle and killed after attempting to assist a loose dog on Thursday.
Officers responded to the report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on State Hwy 74 between Menifee and Briggs Roads in the City of Menifee. When they arrived they located Abel Soto suffering from major injuries, leading to his death at the scene. Through investigation, it was learned that Soto, was driving eastbound on State Hwy 74, when he saw a dog in the roadway. He exited his vehicle to assist the dog, crossing into the westbound lanes of traffic. A 19-year-old Hemet man was driving westbound on State Highway 74 in the #1 lane and collided with Soto.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. He was cooperative during the investigation and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Menifee Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. State Hwy 74 between Menifee Road and Briggs Road was closed temporarily during this investigation. State Hwy 74 re-opened to traffic at 11:05 pm.
