Deputy Injured in Adelanto Traffic Collision

ADELANTO – A deputy was injured as a result of a traffic collision in the City of Adelanto on Sunday night. At around 8:15 p.m. a deputy reported to Sheriff’s dispatchers that he was involved in a traffic collision on Adelanto Road near Air Expressway.

The deputy requested medical aid and reported that he was injured. The deputy said that he was driving with lights and sirens on en route to a foot pursuit near Adelanto Road and Yates, when the traffic collision occurred.

An air ambulance was requested to transport the deputy, but all declined due to the weather conditions. San Bernardino Sheriff’s officials said that deputy and the driver of the pickup truck both sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital by ground ambulance. The other two occupants in the truck declined medical transport and did not appear to be injured.

Witness Robert Ponsor from TriCity Rides said that the deputy was traveling north on Adelanto Road driving at a high rate of speed and the 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck was driving west on Air Expressway. “The cop actually passed me up on Adelanto Road and he was going so fast that I did not have time to pull to the right,” said Ponsor. “He turned on his lights maybe 100 yards behind me, but by that time he was at 80 miles per hour easily.

Ponsor said that the pickup truck was t-boned while crossing the intersection. “He (the deputy) didn’t slow down to a safe enough speed. The truck couldn’t have stopped, it happened so fast.”

The road was closed on Adelanto Road from Rancho Road to Bartlett Road and on Air Expressway from Pearmain to Gateway for the San Bernardino County Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) investigation. The closure is expected to remain for several hours.
