VICTORVILLE – A female juvenile believed to be a recent runaway, was struck by a train in the area of D Street just west of 6th Street in Victorville on Wednesday.
When deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived the female pedestrian was breathing and initially unresponsive. She sustained major injuries and was transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center where she was subsequently airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment where she is in critical but stable condition.
Through investigation, it was learned that the female juvenile walked onto the railroad tracks and stopped in front of a train traveling westbound. The train conductor attempted to stop, slowing the train significantly by applying the emergency brake, officials said. The train was unable to stop before striking the girl.
The road was closed on 6th Street at the railroad between D and E Streets while the investigation took place. Deputies at the scene said that through preliminary investigation, the incident appeared to be an attempted suicide.
