FONTANA – A mother, understandably distraught after witnessing a fatal crash that killed her two children and her mother was rushed in an ambulance to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center after a horrific Fontana crash on Friday afternoon.
Authorities say that 39-year-old La Puente resident Maria Briseno, the mother of the children and daughter of a deceased woman was not injured and was transported to the hospital for observation after paramedics feared for her health due to her fragile mental state.
That afternoon the four, which included two 12-year-old children, Briseno, and their 58-year-old grandmother Maria Rodriguez were on their way to visit family who lives in the City of San Bernardino. The vehicle began to overheat causing them to pull to the shoulder of the 10 freeway near Cherry Avenue in the City of Fontana.
Briseno called her husband to let him know that the car was overheating and that they were on the shoulder of the freeway. Her husband and son immediately began driving to assist with the broken vehicle. As a vehicle sat there parked on the shoulder of the busy freeway, a 60-year-old man identified as Jose Prieto was driving a Toyota Tacoma stopped his vehicle just ahead of the Honda to see if there was any way he could assist.
Briseno, Rodriguez, and Prieto were all outside of the vehicle when the Nissan pickup truck collided into the back of the Honda pushing it into the Toyota pickup. The crash immediately killed Prieto, Rodriguez, and the two children who are identified as step-siblings, Ailyan Miguel and Isaac Briseno. CHP officials said that the two children were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and were believed to have died on impact.
Shortly after the crash Briseno’s husband and son arrived at the scene of the deadly crash. Although the suspect identified as 64-year-old Luis Sanchez of Riverside told authorities that he fell asleep while on his way home from work, authorities are investigating the incident as a possible DUI crash. Sanchez suffered only minor injuries and a blood alcohol test was requested by authorities. The results of that test have not been released at this time.
One family Is now left to mourn the death of their three family members and another family is left to mourn the loss of a good samaritan identified as Jose Prieto. The Briseno and Prieto’s family are asking for the public’s help to provide financial support to help them provide a proper memorial service and burial for their family members who were ripped from their lives without warning, possibly by a DUI driver.
“Unfortunately our family does not have the money to support funeral expenses for the three good lives taken from us and this is where we ask the public for help with this funding,” said Family member Giovanni Rivera. “We ask for your support and any help goes a long way. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, this day will forever be scarred in my life.“
Two GoFundMe accounts have been set up by the Briseno family, both have been approved by the family. One of the GoFundMe account was set up by Giovanni Rivera, the son of Rodriguez and uncle to the children. The second GoFundMe account was set up by family member Letty Briseno Anaya. All of the funds for both accounts will be going to the family for the memorial service and burial of Maria Rodriguez, Ailyan Miguel and Isaac Briseño.
The family of Prieto also started a Go Fund Me account to assist with his memorial service and burial. “My father, the Good Samaritan had pulled over to help the stranded lady with her kids,” said Monica Prieto. “My father was always there to help others. He was a man of God and believed in helping others in need. His love for God always showed on his face.”
