LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) says that they are aware of the impending ICE enforcement actions.
On July 17, 2019, President Donald Trump sent out a tweet saying that the actions will be starting soon, leaving many undocumented families on edge. “Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States,” said President Trump in his tweet. “They will be removed as fast as they come in. Mexico, using their strong immigration laws, is doing a very good job of stopping people.” The enforcement is expected in directly impact approximately 2000 undocumented citizens, with as many as 400 in Southern California.
California in the spirit of being a “sanctuary state” will in no way be supporting or cooperating with ICE. The LAPD said that they will not be participating in the actions, which are set to begin on Sunday. They included that the actions will be directed to those who have already been issued final deportation orders and will include some living in the Los Angeles region.
The LAPD said they are committed to protecting the public through “meaningful relationship building and community partnership.” In a Tweet they said, “Immigration status violations are civil in nature & under federal law are within the jurisdiction and responsibility of federal government agencies such as ICE & U.S. Customs & Border Protection.”
Governor Gavin Newsom said that President Trumps plans to deport undocumented immigrants, including asylum seekers are “cruel, misdirected, and are creating unnecessary fear and anxiety.” In addition he posted a link to the National Immigration Law Center, which explains the rights of every human, documented or not, in the United States.
“ I want Californians to know they have legal rights and protections, regardless of their immigration status. California is a place of refuge – that includes our schools, our courts and our hospitals and clinics,” said Governor Newsom in a written statement. “We hold certain institutions sacred and people should continue to access programs and services they need.”
