SALTON CITY – The U.S. Customs and Border Protection intervened stopping nearly 35 pounds of methamphetamine from entering the United States on Friday. Indio Stations Highway 86 checkpoint Border Patrol agents stopped a 26-year-old U.S. citizen at around 6:30 p.m. when he attempted to pass the checkpoint in a brown 2005 Ford Focus.
The border patrol canine alerted agents to the vehicle during the pre-primary inspection, CBP officials said. The man was then sent for an additional inspection, which includes a closer inspection. During the inspection, agents found a backpack with 14 packages of methamphetamine and they subsequently located 16 additional packages in the rear quarter panels of the car.
The approximate street value of the methamphetamine located is $109,280. The man was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling and his vehicle and methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for investigation.
