LONG BEACH – During a Monday court appearance, a 24-year-old man pleaded guilty to abusing his girlfriend and her two toddler-aged sons causing the death of one official said.
Samuel Aguilar pleaded guilty to seven felony counts including one count each of voluntary manslaughter and injuring a girlfriend; two counts of child abuse; and three counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
The mother of the children, 26-year-old Jessica Cereceres pleaded no contest to two felony counts of child abuse related to the case and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison on May. According to District Attorney’s officials the couple lived together with the two children, who were 1 and 2-years-old.
On August 10, 2014, the 2-year-old boy was brought to the hospital for unspecified body trauma and died as a result of his injuries. Following the death of the toddler, an investigation began and it was determined that the deceased boy’s 1-year-old brother also had a bodily injury.
Through the investigation looking into exams, witness statements, and other evidence, it was learned that the 2-year-old boy died from blunt force trauma to the head and stomach. Officers also learned that the injuries occurred while the children were in the care of Aguilar following a physical argument with Cereceres.
Witnesses also told authorities that they saw Aguilar abusing the two small boys in front of Cereceres, who did nothing to stop him. Aguilar is due back in court on September 21st, where he is expected to be sentenced to 32 years and four months in prison.
