NORWALK, Calif. – The man who left a shotgun in the backseat of a vehicle leading to an accidental shooting leaving the mother of a four-year-old boy injured was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office said that on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, Brandon Gilbert Ambriz, 24, of Norwalk, pleaded to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. On January 23, 2019, the 4-year-old boy was in the backseat of a vehicle while his mother was in the driver’s seat. The child grabbed the shotgun and accidentally shot through the seat, injuring his mother. There were other children in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, but only the mother was injured.

Police said that Ambriz was aware that the children frequently occupied the vehicle where the shotgun was left.
