NEEDLES – A 17-year-old Moreno Valley boy led deputies on a high-speed pursuit then ended in a crash on Thursday authorities said. At around 4:15 a.m. deputies from the Needles Police Department received a call from an employee at the Rodeway Inn and suites in the 1100 block of 3rd Street in Needles. “They left the vehicle running in front of the hotel while they entered the lobby to gather a guest’s luggage,” Needles Sheriff’s officials said. “While away from the van, a Hispanic male entered the courtesy van and drove rapidly away from the hotel.”
Deputies located the van and attempted to stop it as it left the area. The driver failed to yield to the lights and sirens on the patrol vehicle. The deputies pursued the vehicle at high speeds throughout Needles and onto the eastbound 40 freeway. The van reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour on the I-40, nearly colliding with a vehicle. “The driver of the van drove into the center median, near the Park Moabi Rd off-ramp, and collided with the steep dirt embankment causing the vehicle to jump the hill and overturn, landing on its roof,” Sheriff’s said.
The teen was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries sustained in the crash. He was charged with vehicle theft and evading a peace officer. He was released to his parents at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
