APPLE VALLEY – The only living and free family member to four young children who were left without a mother after their father allegedly shot her earlier this month is left to alone, pick up the pieces. On Saturday, June 10, 2017, Tom Robinson and Rocio Martinez were at their home with their four children in the 13300 block of Applewood Road in the Town of Apple Valley. Robinson 53, called 911 to report that he had shot and killed Martinez.
Robinson did not explain, but told the dispatcher that she was “going after their son” and he was not able to stop her, so he shot her. When deputies from the Apple Valley Station arrived, through the windows they could see children walking around. Robinson, had the youngest child, a 1-year-old boy in his arms. Robinson was detained for questioning and the four children, a 1-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, a 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were all taken into protective custody by Children and Family Services.
Following the interview, Robinson was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Murder. Robinson remains in custody at the High Desert Detention Center and bail was set at $1 million. Robinson pleaded not guilty and has since retained private counsel.
Rocio’s mother, the only family she had is fighting to get the children out of protective custody and in her care. At this time, due to her immigration status, she has been unable to be reunited with her grandchildren. While worrying day and night about her young grandchildren and mourning the loss of her daughter, she is still left with the financial burden of a proper memorial service and burial for her daughter.
“Rocio was a very good mother, she was very patient with her four kids the oldest is a special need child,” said family friend, Martha. “She was the only child, this is why she decided to have four kids to give them a big family.” Martha has taken on the task of helping Rocio’s mother get to the courts, make funeral arrangements, and now is helping her to raise funds for the burial.
On Sunday, June 25, 2017, they will be having a fundraiser where authentic Mexican food including pupusas, pozole, tacos, and sopes will be sold. This will take place at 13453 Central Road in the Town of Apple Valley. The sale will start at 10:00 a.m. and will end when the food is all sold. Anyone wishing to help them raise funds should attend and purchase food and/or make a donation.
