HELENDALE, Calif. – Two people were killed following a traffic collision in Helendale on Thursday.
The traffic collision was reported at around 11:25 a.m. in the area of National Trails Highway and Hodge Road. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Jacob Wheeler said that a 70-year-old Yermo woman was driving a 2009 Nissan Versa eastbound on National Trails Highway, west of Hodge Road. At the same time, a 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle was driven by a 50-year-old man from Barstow westbound on National Trails Highway.
The driver of the Nissan, for unknown reasons, allowed her vehicle to cross over the double yellow lines and the westbound lane, before entering the dirt shoulder. She turned back to the right, into the path of the motorcycle. The rider turned left but was not able to avoid the collision, CHP officials said. Both vehicles traveled back across the eastbound lane and off the roadway. The Nissan overturned as a result of the collision.
Both the driver of the motorcycle and the driver of the Nissan were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two passengers were riding with the woman in the Nissan, a 41-year-old woman and a 16-year-old female, both were also from Yermo. Both the woman and teen sustained major injuries and were airlifted to a local trauma center for treatment.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a contributing factor in this collision. This collision is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Area.
