RIVERSIDE – A fiery crash killed three and injured two others Monday evening Riverside fire officials said. At around 4:40 p.m. the City of Riverside fire department responded to Rhonda Road for multiple reports of a plane crash. When they arrived approximately 3 minutes later they located the Cessna 310 that had crashed into two homes causing a fire. After searching one of the homes, two female survivors were located, one who sustained major burns and one in less critical condition who had been ejected from the plane into a home.
Riverside Fire Chief Michael Moore said that the plane, that originated from San Jose had come to the area for a Cheerleading competition at Disney California Adventure Park in the City of Anaheim, which was on Saturday and Sunday. The five occupants were returning home and had just left the Riverside Municipal Airport when they crashed approximately one mile from the airport. Two houses were a complete loss, while three other homes sustained damage. “All victims were from the aircraft, no residents were home,” said Moore during a press conference. The two who survived the crash were described as being in their mid-30’s to early-40’s.
One of the injured was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, while the other was rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Burn Center, where she was rushed into surgery. Firefighters will remain on the scene throughout the night so that there is no fire spread.
The American Red Cross spokesman Tony Briggs said that they responded to the scene to assist five families. They are working to provide them with temporary lodging and to assist with other needs that they may have as a result of the crash. At this time the identity, age, or sex of those deceased is unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
