ADELANTO – After many years of waiting and multiple traffic collisions at the intersection, the traffic signal on Bellflower Street and Palmdale Road are now up and running. The funding for the street widening and signal placement has been available through Measure I funding for several years officials said.
The old city council believed it was in the best interest of the city to wait for the Palmdale Road widening, which is not set until 2018. Although placing the signal now, rather than later will create additional work when the Palmdale Road widening project is complete the city council now in place, knew that it was necessary for the safety of residents.
The street widening and new signal are both imperative to the construction of the new Chevron gas station and mini mart. “If Caltrans comes and asks for the light to be moved in 2 years that is fine. We do not want anything getting in the way of this project, it will save lives and improve aesthetics to the area,” Adelanto Councilman, John R. Woodward said in a past interview.
The city council has several ideas in the works including numerous businesses being built along Highway 395 from the southwest side of Mojave Drive to the Stater Bros. Shopping Center, just south of Seneca Road. “It’s going to be a bunch of little stores, it is going to be like a plaza,” said Adelanto Mayor Richard Kerr.
The plaza is expected to include the first Dunkin’ Donuts within approximately 35 miles with the closest two now in Barstow and Upland. Also expected is a Jersey Mike’s Subs, a transmission shop, and city officials are also attempting to place a gym in that shopping plaza. The estimated completion for phase 1; the area closest to Mojave Drive is approximately 2 years and the remaining construction will commence thereafter.
