Two Killed in Crash Identified as Phelan Mother and Daughter

PHELAN – A mother and daughter killed in the crash on SR-138 on Wednesday afternoon have been identified as Reina Madrid, 53, and Gisseth Madrid, 17, both of Phelan.

At around 1:59 p.m. the California Highway Patrol and emergency medical personnel responded to a traffic collision on State Route 138, around 6 miles west of the 15 freeway. It was learned that Reina Madrid was driving the 2001 Dodge Ram van westbound on SR-138 near Sandstone Road, in the #2 lane. Sergio Robles was driving a 2014 Peterbilt 3-axle truck and trailer in the #1 lane of the eastbound SR-138 at around 55 miles per hour. For unknown reasons, Madrid’s van veered left towards the Peterbilt and Robles, attempting to avoid the collision, veered right and applied his brakes to avoid colliding with her van.

Unable to avoid the collision the left side of the van and the left side of the Peterbilt causing the van to overturn several times. Gisseth Madrid was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and was ejected. She sustained major injuries and died at the scene. Reina Madrid also sustained major injuries and died as a result of the collision. Robles was not injured as a result of the collision. Traffic in both directions was closed for a short time to respond to the patients and clear the roadway.
