With the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, many are taking preventative measures to stop the spread of the quick-spreading virus.
Before the end of January, most in the United States had not heard of the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. On January 30, 2020, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization declared an outbreak. The outbreak, which originated in China spread to the United States rapidly and by March 11, 2020, COVID-19 became a pandemic, spreading to more than 100 locations internationally. School closures, some restaurant closures, bar closures, social distancing, and empty shelves have become a reality in the midst of this virus.
The transmission of the virus is widespread and the hospitals are seeing an influx of patients, some with illnesses mimicking COVID-19. Hospitals in Washington State are reporting a lack of enough respirators to treat those in need of them. With the hospitals being overwhelmed, those who are not in need of emergency care should not seek treatment.
With the food hoarding has left those who did not partake in the hoarding to go without items like bread, meat, frozen vegetables, bottled water, toilet paper, and essential baby items. The school districts have begun serving drive-thru school lunches and sending the children home with breakfast for the following morning.
Several businesses are doing their part to help the communities in their areas while many are being self-quarantined, while others in the State of California are under mandatory quarantine for up to three weeks. Other areas of California will likely follow with mandatory quarantine.
Electric and natural gas customers can rest easy knowing that their utility services will not be disconnected for the time being. Southern California Edison (SCE) and Southwest Gas have both suspended disconnection for nonpayment indefinitely.
