BIG BEAR – An inmate died while in custody at the Big Bear Jail on Tuesday officials said. The inmate was placed under arrested after a search warrant was served at a home in the 300 block of East Country Club Boulevard. The search was being conducted as a result of a child molestation accusation and investigation.
Richard Todd, 60, was taken into custody and booked into the Big Bear Jail for molesting a minor, possession of child pornography, and the possession of an illegal assault rifle. The following morning at 4:23 a.m. a deputy found Todd hanging from the bars of his cell. He hung from shoe laces, which were tied around his neck. The deputy immediately cut the laces from his neck and called for assistance. Medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Todd, who was being housed alone in the cell, deceased.
As part of jail protocol, a death investigation is being conducted and Riverside County will be conducting an autopsy to determine Todd’s cause of death.
