BARSTOW – A 24-year-old Adelanto man was arrested after attempting to steal food items from a Barstow Dollar General Store on Wednesday afternoon. At around 3:45 p.m. a store employee at the store located in the 300 block of East Main Street in Barstow reported a burglary in progress. The reporting party told dispatchers that the male suspect, later identified as Dorsey Purify Jr., fled from the store with several store items then fled the store heading west. Officers arrived around a minute later and began an area check using the description provided by the store employee, which was a black man wearing a gray long sleeve sweatshirt and dark colored pants.
They located a male subject who matched the suspect description on the corner of Nancy Street and Avenue “A”. Purify was detained and through further investigation, it was learned that he was on active probation for robbery in Los Angeles County. Several food items were located in Purify’s waistband. It was determined that Purify walked into the store, collected items from the store shelves, and place them into his waistband. He then walked passed by the cashiers and attempted to leave the store.”A store employee saw the items in his waistband and demanded that the items be returned,” Barstow Police officials said. “ Purify physically assaulted the employee and then threatened to harm other employees if they attempted to intercede further.”
The store employees called the police and store surveillance footage of the incident corroborated the witness statements.Purify was identified as the man who robbed the store and was transported to the Barstow Police Department for questioning. The stolen items were returned to the store and Purify was booked into jail for robbery. He is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on July 11, 2017, and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
