VICTORVILLE – An Adelanto man was convicted of the abuse of his 74-year-old roommate and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

On October 9, 2018, at around 11:24 p.m. deputies responded to the 11200 block of La Habra Avenue in the City of Adelanto in response to a concerned citizen reporting that the elderly woman had been seen with bruises on her face. The deputy arrived and made contact with the victim and her roommate, Roberto Angelo Benitez. Through investigation, he learned that on Sunday, October 7, 2018, at around 4:00 p.m. the two were involved in a verbal altercation. The argument escalated and Benitez struck the woman in her face and head. Deputies reported seeing the visible bruising in the areas where she was struck.

Benitez was arrested for elder abuse on Thursday, October 18, 2018, Benitez appeared at the Victorville Superior Court where he pleaded no contest to Battery Against Elder. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail. In addition to the 90-day sentence, he will also be on probation for a period of three years.
